When a Title Becomes an Identity
by Odilia McLeod
I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact layoffs have, not just financially, but personally.
I’ve seen it in others, and I’ve felt it myself at different points in my career… that quiet but heavy question: 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦?
For a long time, I didn’t realize how closely I had tied my identity to my role at work. The role, the level, the recognition, it all became part of how I saw myself.
So when that shifts or disappears, it can feel like something deeper is lost too.
Titles describe what we do. They don’t define who we are.
And yet, it’s easy to blur that line, especially when you care deeply and take pride in showing up fully.
If you’re navigating a transition right now, I want to remind you:
𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻, 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁.
That is what no title can give you, and no circumstance can take away.
That is what moves with you.
And sometimes, losing the title is exactly what creates the space to remember who you are without it, and to reclaim the parts of you that were always beyond it.
