For a couple of years after my 22-year-old cat passed away, I couldn’t imagine having another pet.
She had been with me through many chapters of my life. Career milestones, amazing moments, heartbreak, endings and new beginnings… Losing her left a space I wasn’t ready to fill.
A few weeks ago, three seven-week-old kittens entered our lives.
Watching them has been unexpectedly profound.
Every day they become a little braver. A little more curious. A little more confident.
Not because someone is pushing them, but because they’re learning they are safe.
They know they’ll be fed, protected, encouraged, redirected when needed, given boundaries, consistency, and the freedom to explore.
It made me realize how true this is for us, too. People don’t do their best work when they’re constantly looking over their shoulder.
They thrive when they know what to expect. When leaders are consistent. When feedback is intended to help them grow, not catch them failing. When accountability exists alongside trust. When they’re given both the tools and the autonomy to succeed.
Yet too many workplaces unintentionally create the opposite.
Micromanagement instead of empowerment.
Fear instead of psychological safety.
Control instead of trust.
And then we wonder why innovation stalls, confidence disappears, and people stop bringing their best ideas forward.
The environments we create shape the people within them.
Whether we’re raising kittens, leading a team, or coaching others through change, one question is worth asking: 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙄’𝙢 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚’𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙨… 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡?
