Release the Ties that Hold You Back

by Odilia McLeod
Have you ever been in a situation where someone you trusted deeply disappointed you? Where you felt betrayed, blindsided, knocked down?
In moments like these, doubt creeps in. You begin to question yourself, your instincts, your judgment. How did I not see this coming? How did I place my trust in someone who didn’t deserve it?
What comes next?
First, you absorb the blow. You learn what you can. And then, when you’re ready, it becomes time to let go. Because if you don’t, the weight of it will pull you under. It will cloud your days, haunt your nights, and fill the quiet hours with bitterness, uncertainty, and exhaustion.
The longer you hold on to what no longer serves you, the more familiar it becomes. You start to find comfort in its jagged edges. It’s the pain you know. The place you learn to dwell in. Worse yet, it begins to define you. Your thoughts, your actions, your sense of self, until you can no longer remember who you are without the anger, the disappointment, the doubt.
Joy, hope, dreaming, they start to feel like faraway concepts. Almost unsafe. What if you can’t sustain that lighter space? What if it slips away? The heaviness starts to feel real, tangible. manageable. This you can contend with… this you know.
Don’t fool yourself! That painful space will never be the answer.
At some point, a choice appears. Depending on your temperament, you may turn the pain inward, sink into the darkest corners, and stay there far longer than necessary, or you decide that enough is enough and begin to rise.
What separates those who stay stuck from those who move forward? Self-awareness, resilience, confidence, optimism, support. The right move is always the same: free yourself from what no longer serves you.
Let go of what is obsolete, outgrown, done.
Here is how that begins:
- Dissect the situation: Name what happened and why, sticking to facts without blame or judgment.
- Find the lesson: Ask yourself what this experience offered you in awareness, growth, or preparation for what comes next.
- Name the emotions: Anger. Disappointment. Shame. Sadness. Feel them fully, one by one. Then breathe them out and let their grip dissolve.
- Accept: Acknowledge what happened exactly as it did. It becomes a chapter, not a life sentence.
- Forgive and let go: Whether it’s yourself or others, visualize the chains that bind you to this painful space dissolving. Feel the weight lift and disengage from your soul. Set yourself free.
- Redefine and recharge: Notice how much lighter it feels to breathe again. Allow hope to return.
- Take the next step forward: Channel your inner strength and channel your resolve into action and begin again.
Repeat as needed.
Find a new center. A new grounding within yourself. Trust that you can sustain that hopeful space and allow it to carry you farther than you’ve ever been before. You have learned the lesson and gained clarity as to what to look for moving forward.
Unearthing hope and allowing yourself to dream again after being brought to your knees is not easy. But consider this: letting go of the could-have’s, should-have’s, and what-if’s, standing back up, and stepping toward a better future is not just an option, it’s the only choice that leads to freedom.
Be kind to yourself. Don’t waste your energy on spilled milk.
You have the power to let go and to step into a brighter future.
